The last Lunar Eclipse of 2019 is coming and it will be visible from India by next week on the night of July 16 and 17.

The partial lunar eclipse will be visible from beginning to end from all places of India except extreme from the north eastern part of Arunachal Pradesh.

A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and Moon but the three celestial bodies do not form a straight line in space.

When that happens, a part of the Moon’s surface is covered by the darkest, central part of the Earth’s shadow.

Though eclipses are fascinating phenomenon and a sight to behold, often they get associated with multiple myths which are often absurd.

Often eclipses are considered to be bad omens and get related to beliefs and superstitions. Here are 10 absurd myths that are associated with lunar eclipses.

1. One of the most popular myths or most followed superstitions related to lunar eclipse is that one should not eat food or drink during the eclipse. Most people believe that food goes bad during the period and may cause indigestion.

2. In fact, many people cover their food with tulsi leaves to protect it from going bad.

3. Though an eclipse is associated with bad omens, people usually believe it is the best time to wash away your sins. It is believed one must take bath and wash away all negativity to ensure that you achieve salvation. Many people also visit the Ganges to take a bath and wash away their sins.

4. In many parts, pregnant women are usually advised to stay indoors during the eclipse as the eclipse can curse the unborn child. In fact, there is another myth which says that pregnant women should not hold knives and sharp objects as it might leave a birthmark on the child.

5. Many people also believe that if you bleed during an eclipse you bleed longer and the scars of the wound remain for a lifetime.

6. It is a widely believed superstition which comes from the bible says that an eclipse is a sign of an apocalypse.

7. The Kalina people, indigenous people native to Suriname of South America believed that the sun and the moon are brothers. And if an eclipse occurs, it means that one of them knocked the other out.

8. It is generally believed that one cannot watch lunar eclipse with naked eyes as it can harm your vision. Despite what some people think, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye, though special precautions do need to be taken when viewing solar eclipses.

9. In Tibet, people think that good and bad deeds are multiplied during an eclipse.

10. According to the Norse mythology, eclipses are premonition to Ragnarok. When eclipses take place they believe that wolves Hati and Skoll have swallowed their prey- the sun or the moon, leading to an eternal darkness on Earth.
